18 Jul £140million Salford Quays development underway
In the 1980s, the Waterfront Quays development offered exciting new opportunities to the Salford Quays area, bringing commercial ventures into a low socio-economic area. However, times have changed and these buildings no longer offer the same benefits to business and there has been a move to transform the area with up to 800 new homes.
Property developers, T H Real Estate, have been given the go ahead from Salford councillors to bring 600 to 800 new apartments to Salford Quays. Despite some opposition from nearby residents, permission was granted for the development. There will also be underground parking, restaurants and shops and a new plaza.
It would seem that ‘water side living’ receives significantly more interest than 80s style office blocks and there is expected to be a lot of interest in the new development. The apartments will be conveniently located between Media City UK and Manchester city centre, as well as having easy access to the motor way.
The plan was given permission under the stipulation that £350,000 be contributed to improving pedestrianised areas in the area, and the plans include plants and trees to bring additional green areas to Salford Quays. The design of the buildings is expected to reflect the industrial dockside heritage of the area.
The development is expected to be partially completed by 2018 with further phases continuing until 2021.
