Great Northern Warehouse to receive £300m overhaul

The monumental building that is the Great Northern Warehouse is hard to miss at the southern end of Deansgate. Currently home to the AMC cinema, All Star Lanes, Almost Famous Burgers, James Martin’s restaurant, and various other retail and hospitality outlets, it has gone through phases of popularity and success over the years.

Originally the railway goods warehouse, it was Grade II listed in 1974 and refurbished into its current leisure centre layout in 1999. These refurbishments have proved to be a failure with the building not being used to its greatest ability. It has recently been purchased by Hong Kong property company Peterson Group who have plans to develop the building into mixed use residential, retail, restaurants, offices and cinema space.

The £300million development is a joint initiative between Peterson Group and Triology Property. Robert Wolstenholme, managing director of Trilogy Property, said “The iconic buildings, the Deansgate address, great transport links and proximity to the city’s prime civic, office and hotel locations puts the Great Northern opportunity on a par with New York’s Soho or San Francisco’s South of Market district.”

Manchester’s position as the Northern Powerhouse is drawing a lot of interest from developers such as Peterson Group who see it as an excellent location to invest in property. The redevelopments to the Great Northern Warehouse are expected to occur in phases until 2024.
