Manchester is a lively city with a rich cultural heritage, plenty of things to see and do, and lots of family-friendly neighbourhoods. Plus, whether you’re in search of great schools, green spaces or a thriving sense of community, you’re sure to find it closeby. So keep scrolling to find out about our favourite family-friendly areas in Manchester.

Didsbury

As one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods for families, Didsbury is popular for its schools – both secondary and primary. What’s more, there are lots of parks in the nearby area, which are ideal for letting off some steam. Families can enjoy outdoor activities, a diverse events calendar and even nature walks all throughout the year. The town also boasts a variety of restaurants, cafes and shops meaning there’s always something to do.

Chorlton

Home to Manchester’s trendiest street, Chorlton has an upcoming and bohemian vibe as well as a strong community spirit. There are lots of parks to explore and plenty of green spaces for kids and pups alike. Plus, there’s a range of good schools here and the high street is lined with independent cafes, shops and restaurants – all of which add to the charm of Chorlton for families.

Sale

Popular for its schools and fantastic transport links (it’s served by several tram stops, making travelling into the city very easy), Sale has remained a family-favourite. Sale Grammar School is one of the most well-regarded schools in the area and Sale Water Park offers plenty of recreational activities for families of all ages.

Altrincham

Modern and trendy, and having seen a huge amount of regeneration over the years, Altrincham has transformed into a lively family-friendly area. The town itself is home to an award-winning market where food stalls, shops and events take place every week. But if you’re looking for alternative family outings, there are plenty of green spaces to enjoy including Stamford Park, which is Grade II listed. In terms of schools, there’s a grammar school for both boys and girls respectively which has firmly put Altrincham on the map for families in Manchester.

Prestwich

Dubbed the new Didsbury, Prestwich has been a firm favourite amongst families for many years and its popularity is growing. This is mainly due to a range of good schools and even an arts college. Heaton Park, one of the largest in Europe, also provides a huge amount of space for family activities, and Prestwich itself is home to lots of cafes, restaurants and local events. A regular tram service also means it’s ideal for travelling to and from Manchester.
