27 Jun Manchester’s best hidden gems you need to visit
When you first think of Manchester, places like Deansgate and the Northern Quarter usually spring to mind. But there is also a treasure trove of lesser-known spots that give Manchester its true character. So, whether you’ve just moved here or have lived in the area for years, here are four local hidden gems that deserve to be visited on your next day off.
St John’s Gardens
Tucked away by the Science and Industry Museum is St John’s Gardens. Think of it like a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of the city centre, built on the site of a former 18th century church. It’s the ideal place for enjoying a book, sipping on a coffee or escaping the busy rush for an hour on your lunch break.
St Mary’s Church
Also known as the Hidden Gem Church, St Mary’s can be found down a quiet side street between Albert Square and Deansgate. It’s surrounded by Victorian warehouses, hence the name, and houses beautiful artwork and interiors. Once inside, it’s hard to believe you’re so close to city centre traffic.
Vimto Park
Nestled by the University of Manchester is this quirky little park with a huge wooden monument dedicated to Manchester’s Vimto. The soft drink was invented here in 1908 and travellers from all over come to see the carving. In the spring and summer, it’s even surrounded by wildflowers and makes for a great photo spot.
Ancoats Marina
Few know about the hidden marina tucked just behind the main square at Ancoats. Here, you’ll find Cotton Field Park which features a boardwalk, small urban beach and canal boats. Grab a drink and pastry and find a quiet spot to watch them drift by.
