22 Jan Exploring the Best of Manchester in Winter
We might be biased but during this time of year, Manchester really transforms into a winter wonderland. And, whether you’re new to the city or a long-time resident, there’s always something to do and something new to explore. So, without further ado, here’s our guide to the best things Manchester has to offer during winter.
Winter walks
Heaton Park is one of the largest municipal parks in Europe and it’s the perfect place for a crisp walk. Trams run regularly from Manchester City Centre to the park or there is plenty of parking for those driving. Once there, you can enjoy the frosty landscape and lots of space for little ones and dogs to run free. Alternatively, there’s Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden in Didsbury which is somewhat a hidden gem with well-maintained gardens and paths and plenty of picture-perfect scenes.
Cultural escapes
If you’re looking for somewhere to get in from the cold weather, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Manchester Art Gallery. Here, you’ll find lots of art collections and specialist exhibitions put on throughout the year. The Science and Industry Museum is also a family-friendly destination that looks into Manchester’s heritage and offers exciting exhibits for all ages.
Seasonal markets
The Christmas markets might have finished but Manchester is home to a few winter markets and pop-up events in January. This includes The Makers Market which appears in various towns showcasing local artisans, crafts and food stalls. There’s also pantomimes and winter light trails on the calendar in local areas and parks so be sure to check listings.
Cosy eateries
Head into the city and you’ll find a whole host of cafes and restaurants just waiting to invite you in. The Northern Quarter has some of the best including firm favourites Ezra & Gill and Fig + Sparrow. Or wander up to Castlefield for some picturesque canal side dining and treat yourself to hot chocolate with all the extras.
Sports and activities
Adrenaline seekers are sure to love Manchester’s Chill Factore which brings the Alps to you with skiing, snowboarding and tubing. Manchester’s Ice Rink also makes an appearance in Cathedral Gardens and it’s the ideal place for a fun day out with friends and family. It’s not just about sport either as Manchester is home to several musical and theatre destinations like Albert Hall and The Lowry Theatre – both of which have live performances sure to shake off the winter blues.
The weather might be miserable at times but a winter in Manchester offers lots of opportunities to explore and stay entertained. In fact, whether you’re looking to enjoy nature, cuisine or culture, there’s something for everyone. So wrap up warm and make the most of our fantastic city – and if you’re looking for somewhere to call home, we’re always just a message away.
